Netscape’s Pay-More-For-Less Plan

This is old enough, and the Netscape browser dept. is basically empty, so I think it’s safe to post this publicly now..

Back in the summer of 1998, I purchased a browser subscription from Netscape. This was supposed to give me access to a ‘subscriber only’ server, for faster downloads and – I thought – first release access to the new browser versions. This turned out to not be true, and the ‘subscriber only’ server didn’t have the new browser until the following day, after most of the initial traffic hit anway. I didn’t understand why I was paying for a subscription if I was going to get worse service than if I was not paying, so I sent them an e-mail:

As a subscriber, I must say I am a little dissappointed. I just received e-mail confirmation that 4.06 is out, yet it has been public for *at least* a full day. It was available on the public part of Netscape’s site before it was in the Subscriber Only section. What is the reasoning behind the (payed for) Subscriber Only section if it is the last place a new version is made available?

I received this reply the following month:

Dear Mr. Collicott:
Thank you for your e-mail inquiry. The main reason for the Subscriber Only section is so that you don’t have to fight with the general public while downloading the updated versions of our products. As to why it was released to the public before the subscribers, your guess is as good as mine. It probably has something to do with money grubbing exeutives at corporate headquarters or lack of reason on the part of someone in a power position. Whatever the issue is, I would have to agree with the fact that it probably isn’t the way they should do things. I’m only a customer service rep. though, so there really isn’t much I can do about it. Thank you for your patience and we hope you continue as a valued Netscape customer.
