Derek Webb

September10

Prodigal SonDerek Webb used to be the lead singer for the group Caedmon’s Call, and now has his own projects going on. I have always liked Caedmon’s Call, and Derek’s voice, and even though I’m not too knowledgeable about his songs, I have liked what I’ve heard so far.

Anyway, he is actually coming to where I am currently going to church, Coram Deo, in Omaha in October! His lyrics and songs from his new album, Mockingbird, are pretty deep and cutting into the reality of what’s going on in the world (social justice, war, etc). He has some free songs on his myspace (www.myspace.com/derekwebb), and he is currently offering his cd, Mockingbird, for free download off of his website (www.derekwebb.com).

Anyway, I came across his song, “Wedding Dress,” and it’s a beautiful song. Here are the lyrics (http://www.ap0s7le.com/list/song/322/Derek_Webb/Wedding_Dress), if you want to check it out. To me, I guess, it just was a beautiful picture of God’s absolutely undeserved crazy grace, and the beautiful image of us being free to “run down the aisle” to him, completely unashamed and passionately in love! Redemption is a concept that is easy to understand in my mind, but the reality of what that really means and realizing that all I have to do is “put you on just like a wedding dress” to run down the aisle to God is overwhelmingly beautiful.

That is really a simple way to put what I’m meaning and thinking, but I hope you get me.

Since I have been an avid lover of Caedmon’s Call since about 1996, I also enjoy Derek’s music & listen to “She Must & Shall Go Free” (with the Wedding dress song on it–the C.D. you & Jenn gave me for my birthday in ‘03)quite a bit! (But I think Derek is still one of the lead singers for C.C.–he has been doing his own stuff for a while & somehow seems to be balancing the two.)

If you like him, you should also try another member of Caedmon’s Call (Andrew Osenga)solo albums. http://www.andrewosenga.com/store/

And a good friend of the group & one of my personal favorite artists…Andrew Petersen–who will be in concert in Elkhorn for the second year in a row with his Christmas Concert (in early Dec.). Last year, Webb & Osenga were also on tour with him. http://www.andrew-peterson.com/news

Thanks Jill! I always think of you whenever I hear/talk/think about Caedmon’s Call. You just fit into most memories I have of the group. :)

Are you going to the Andrew Petersen concert again?

[...] Derek (also see this post) has this older cd that Ivy told me about titled, “House Show,” in which he plays 10 songs to a live audience, with some pretty challenging and interesting things to say inbetween. If you know anything about Derek Webb, well…I was just going to put in a phrase or two to encapture what I think of him and what he’s trying to do, but I should let you research that and decide for yourself. Anyway, there is one particular segment of his discussion about the Gospel that I especially thought about today, and I basically typed it out, not quite word for word, but it’s close. [...]
