The writing shelves need facing that provides a nice appearance consistent with Greene and Greene as well as utility. A common theme in their work appears to be the use of a breadboard for stabilizing wood movement and for ornamentation. I chose to use some Indian Rosewood that I picked up some months back for another project.
I love the smell of this wood when sawn or routed. But, it is pretty brittle, and I found that small passes on the router were needed to avoid a splintering effect.
I cut enough length for each breadboard piece so that it I can extend beyond the opening on each side which will leave the shelf proud from the desk opening. It is also a little thicker, and I plan to utilize that thickness as a means of providing a pull from the underside.
A 5/16 straight router bit was used to cut the groove in the end of the oak.
